Certificate I in Construction (CPC10120) - Your first step towards a trade career
This nationally recognised qualification is ideal for students interested in exploring a career in the construction industry. It offers practical, hands-on experience and introduces real-world skills used on construction sites.

The CPC10120 Certificate I in Construction is delivered in arrangement with Queensland secondary schools during school terms, fitting around your school timetable. Theory is delivered through our interactive and engaging online learning management system (LMS) while our practical training takes place face-to-face at your school or in our Training Centre, giving you hands-on exposure to real industry practices.
Students can earn QCE points if delivered as part of their senior studies.
This course is designed for:
- Students enrolled in a Queensland Secondary School in Years 10–12 seeking to start their construction career through VET in Schools (VETiS). NOTE: This qualification is being replaced by CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways from 2027. We can deliver either qualification in 2026.
- Learners wanting an introduction to construction tasks before committing to a trade apprenticeship.
- Students who wants to gain a solid foundation of safety and trade skills that employers in the building and construction industry demand.
On successful completion of 11 units of competency you will earn:
- A QLD White Card (General Construction Induction Training) - mandatory for working on any construction site in Australia,
- A Statement of Attainment for a nationally recognised VET qualification,
- Foundation skills to help you confidently step into the construction industry.
This qualification can lead to entry-level roles, such as:
- Labourer
- Trades Assistant
- Apprenticeship opportunities in areas like:
- Carpentry
- Wall & Floor Tiling
- Wall & Ceiling Lining
- Painting & Decorating
- Bricklaying/ Blocklaying
- Joinery & Shopfitting
- Plumbing
- Electrician
This course is part of the CPC- Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package.
Please note: Completion does not guarantee an apprenticeship, but it provides a strong foundation to pursue one.
Over the course of your training, you’ll build a foundation of core skills that are essential to working safely and effectively on construction sites.
You’ll learn how to:
- work effectively and sustainably in the construction industry,
- plan and organise work,
- carry out measurements and calculations,
- apply work health and safety requirements for a construction site,
- prepare to work safely in the construction industry,
- apply basic levelling procedures,
- handle construction/carpentry materials,
- carry out concreting to simple forms, and
- develop problem solving and teamwork skills.
The program blends online learning with a practical hands-on project. By the time you complete your Certificate I, you’ll not only have a taste of what is involved in a career in construction, but you’ll also have the skills and confidence to take the next step.
Our online learning modules are delivered through a user-friendly platform and packed with interactive videos, images, and activities — all designed to keep you engaged and make your learning experience more effective and enjoyable.
Our Trainers and Assessors attend the school and are responsible for all training and assessment
Over the course of the qualification, you will be assessed with online quizzes and activities in our Learning Management System, as well as observed by our Trainer that you can competently complete practical tasks.
To successfully complete the course and receive your certification, you must be deemed competent in all online and practical assessments.

Tech and Access
- Internet access – Some parts of this course are delivered online, so you’ll need a stable connection.
- A device – A computer, tablet, or smartphone with microphone and webcam to access course content and complete online tasks.
Identification and Attendance
- Identification – You’ll need to provide a valid form of ID such as your birth certificate or passport and your student card or letter from school confirming your enrolment.
- A Unique Student Identifier (USI) – If you don’t have one already, you can apply at usi.gov.au
- Attendance at all practical workshops – You’ll need to attend all practical workshops as scheduled.
Skills and Ability Check
To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will ask you a few quick questions during your enrolment to confirm:
- Your physical ability – You’ll need to be able to lift heavy construction materials,
- Your Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills – We recommend skills at ACSF Level 1 or above. If your results fall below the recommended ACSF, we encourage you to review the support document provided with your LLND indicator results. It outlines internal and external learning support options that may help you build the necessary skills or assist you throughout your training.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
When undergoing practical training, you are responsible for your own protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210. All other PPE will be supplied by us.
Students must wear PPE as directed. If you fail to wear provided PPE, you will not be permitted to participate in practical classes.

Your enrolment won’t be confirmed until you’ve completed all enrolment tasks, we’ve assessed your suitability and checked your eligibility for VETiS funding.

This qualification is funded under the Queensland Government’s VET in Schools (VETiS2026) program through the General Training Pathway to eligible students. For further information visit our Funding page.

To be eligible for VETiS2026 funding you must:
- be enrolled in Year 10, 11 or 12 in a Queensland Secondary School at the time of commencement,
- not be an international secondary school exchange student,
- not have already completed or currently undertaking a Certificate I or II VETiS qualification funded by the Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET),
- have a genuine interest in pursuing a post school vocational occupation, and
- have permission from your school to undertake this course.
NOTE: Students are entitled to one VETiS-funded qualification only. If you have already accessed VETiS funding for another course, you can still undertake the course through our fee-for-service cost of $2,500 GST Free.
Your school’s VET Coordinator can help you confirm your eligibility and guide you through the funding process. By choosing this qualification, you’ll be investing your VETiS entitlement in a nationally recognised course that opens doors to apprenticeships and entry level jobs across the construction industry.
You may be able to reduce the time required to complete your training with Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) and credit transfers.
