Identifying Electrical Hazards in the Workplace
This article shares some information about Inscope's Electrical Safety Awareness course and how you can keep safe or how a business can keep their staff safe from electrical hazards in the workplace.
On average fifteen people die every year in Australia from electrical accidents in the workplace. The most common reasons for these deaths include:
- Lack of training or supervision
- Incorrect work practices
- Lack of maintenance
- A hazardous workplace environment
- Faulty or damaged electrical equipment
- Unauthorised repairs on electrical equipment
There are some simple tasks you can undertake to identify electrical hazards in the workplace to protect yourself and your co-workers:
- Turn off the power and unplug before touching, cleaning or maintaining any electrical equipment.
- Perform regular inspections on electrical equipment. Check for any nicks or cuts. Check that the test tag is in date. If you find damaged electrical equipment or extension leads throw them out after disconnecting and cutting off the cord and plugs at each end.
- Only maintain, service and operate electrical equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.
- Before purchasing new electrical equipment look for the regulatory compliance mark (RCM) to show it meets Australian safety requirements.
Inscope Training’s electrical safety awareness course covers the issues, effects and the hazards of working near and with electrical installations and equipment. It also covers the obligations of workers and persons in control of a business or undertaking with regard to electricity in the workplace.
